The IB at TASOK: Learning with Purpose, Leading with Heart
At The American School of Kinshasa (TASOK), the International Baccalaureate (IB) program is a natural extension of who we are: a diverse, inclusive, and globally minded learning community. Through the PYP, MYP, and DP, our students are challenged academically while being supported personally - empowered to grow into thoughtful, independent global leaders.
We chose the IB because it aligns with our belief in Excellence, Integrity, and Inclusivity, and because it reflects the kind of education our world needs—one that values inquiry, ethical action, and international understanding.
Our approach is also grounded in research. John Hattie’s studies highlight Cognitive Task Analysis as a top strategy for accelerating learning. This method, embedded in IB teaching, helps students break down complex tasks, making thinking visible and empowering them to take ownership of their learning.
At TASOK, students are not just taught - they are known, supported, and inspired. The IB helps us nurture confident, compassionate learners ready to thrive in a complex and interconnected world.
The Three IB Programs at TASOK

Primary Years Program
The PYP at TASOK (Preschool–Grade 5) nurtures curiosity, creativity, and confidence through hands-on, inquiry-based learning. Students explore big ideas across subjects, developing foundational skills while learning to think critically and act with empathy. In our supportive and joyful environment, every child is encouraged to ask questions, make connections, and grow as a caring and capable learner.
Middle Years Program
The MYP at TASOK (Grades 6–10) bridges the transition from childhood to adolescence with a strong focus on identity, reflection, and global citizenship. Students investigate real-world issues through interdisciplinary learning, building both academic rigor and emotional resilience. With guidance from dedicated teachers, students grow into independent thinkers who take meaningful action in their community and beyond.
Diploma Program
The DP at TASOK (Grades 11–12) prepares students for success in university and life through a challenging, internationally recognized curriculum. Students develop advanced skills in research, writing, and ethical thinking while exploring complex global issues. With strong guidance and personal care, each student is empowered to grow intellectually, ethically, and confidently as a future-ready global citizen.
The IB Learner Profile
The International Baccalaureate (IB) learner profile describes a broad range of human capacities and responsibilities that go beyond academic success. They imply a commitment to help all members of the school community learn to respect themselves, others and the world around them. Each of the IB's program is committed to the development of students according to the IB learner profile.
The profile aims to develop learners who are:
- Inquirers
- Knowledgeable
- Thinkers
- Communicators
- Principled
- Open-minded
- Caring
- Risk-takers
- Balanced
- Reflective.
