About Our Community of Learners

The American School of Kinshasa provides dynamic and individualized educational challenges and opportunities that promote diversity and empower each of its students to develop into independent global community leaders.

TASOK, founded in 1961, has persevered with pride over the years in the midst of a challenging political landscape. Despite these challenges, TASOK has continued its long-standing tradition of providing a rigorous academic American high school program. To this end, the school graduated its first IB Diploma Programme Candidates in May 2019

Secondary School

TASOK High School students are bright, kind, engaging, and active. Our high school program promotes student growth through a strong academic program that employs English as a medium of instruction to develop students who possess a passion for learning and a healthy curiosity about the world around them. We strive to nurture our students’ creativity and challenge them to think both critically and independently.

Our community takes great pride in our many nationalities, languages, and cultures. TASOK High School values a culture of caring, where students are safe to explore and embrace their individuality. We appreciate the unique perspective that each student brings and believe every individual enhances the learning environment. We foster a student body that identifies as part of an evolving world community and endeavor to authentically connect students to our host country, the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

TASOK High School is a great place to be!

Primary Years Programme

At The American School of Kinshasa (TASOK) we are committed to the development of the whole child. using the Primary Years Programme (PYP) curriculum framework, our teachers design and create curriculum to meet the needs of elementary learners. Our programme is founded on the belief that every person is born with a sense of pleasure in exploration and a spirit of delight in discovery through play, and that the best learning occurs when children feel that they are known, that their ideas are heard, their hopes are honoured, and their perceptions are validated. Our most important goal is to help children become enthusiastic learners by encouraging them to be active and creative explorers who are not afraid to take risks, try out ideas and develop their own thoughts.

At TASOK, we seek to foster each child’s intellectual, physical, emotional, social, cultural, and aesthetic growth. Our basic philosophy is that children learn best by doing. Their discovery is concrete and is based upon their own experiences. Children are given opportunities to explore, experiment, and discover with hands-on materials. Their play is their work. As well as being experiential, the programme is child-centred and flexible. The curriculum is integrated across the age groupings, and introduces meaningful units of inquiry which spark children’s natural curiosities, interests and enthusiasm. We believe children go through sequences of growth within which they each have their own individual pattern of growth, personality, and learning style. Each year the curriculum builds upon what the children have learned the year before.

Each child is appreciated and accepted at the level of their own maturity and ability. Children are given the opportunities to develop, grow, and learn in a non-competitive climate of genuine affection and warmth, in their own time and in their own unique way.

Activities

The purpose of The American School of Kinshasa’s After School Activities (ASA) program is to provide all students with a wide range of opportunities to be involved in school-sponsored activities outside of the school day. A focus on diversity and inclusion helps us to provide the most relevant opportunities for our students, and we constantly strive to improve the quality and number of activities offered.

TASOK believes that participation in After School Activities is an integral component of holistic student development. Participation in After School Activities allows TASOK students the freedom to go beyond the classroom to discover new and unique activities that interest them, and offers faculty and staff the opportunity to impart skills and expertise to our students.

After School Activities are offered at TASOK on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays after school from 3:15 – 4:15 PM, as well as Saturday mornings. TASOK teachers and community members volunteer their time and expertise to sponsor a variety of clubs, activities, and varsity sports each trimester. Please read about our clubs and activities to see more about this trimester’s offerings and to get involved!
