We hope that our new web site offers you the information you need to learn about our school, one of the oldest American international schools in sub-Saharan Africa. TASOK has been providing a high quality American education to English speaking students in Kinshasa since 1961. For over 30 years, TASOK has been accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and offers a first world quality education comparable to suburban schools in the US. Our curriculum is student centered and progressive offering skilled instruction that differentiates for varied learning styles and interests. Our setting is 42 acres of gardens and forests, a true oasis in this sprawling African city of 12 million. Purpose-built facilities include separate facilities for PE, art, music, and technology in elementary and secondary. There are separate libraries and librarians for elementary and secondary. A campus-wide intranet distributes satellite dish connectivity to every classroom and the two computer labs. Overseas teachers, primarily from the US, Canada, and the UK live on the campus in one of two residential areas.
TASOK is sponsored by the State Department of the United States through the Office of Overseas Schools, and operates in the Congo under the auspices of the United States Embassy in Kinshasa. Our major population is American, followed by Indian and Canadian citizens. The school is governed by a seven member Board of Directors, which must include a minimum of 4 US citizens, including the Board President. Recently TASOK hosted a visit by an American architect in preparation for a Campus Master Plan to be submitted to TASOK by June 2010. The Master Plan contains plans for renovating classrooms to be more environmentally conscious and more energy efficient and also includes plans for conserving ore gardens and forests.
TASOK is noted for the positive, friendly relations among students and between students and faculty. In its early days TASOK was actually called the school of many friends. Over 30 different nationalities mingle daily in classes, and TASOK emphasizes an international perspective on learning. On our web site we aim to give you a sense of our shared purpose and dedication to student development. If you have further questions after exploring the web site, don’t hesitate to contact the TASOK superintendent or principal at super@tasok.cd or principal@tasok.cd. We are always glad to talk about TASOK’s programs.
Warm regards,
Irene Epp
